Solar Energy FAQs

Which size system will i need?

Choosing the size of the solar energy system is all dependant on the amount of power consumption required to run your home.

Some people may choose to install a small system to lower their power bill while others may look to minimise their need to pay for power at all. The average New Zealand home requires a system between 5-6 kilowatts to achieve this.

Our trained solar technicians offer a free home assessment and can help you choose the right system by analyzing your past power consumption.

What side of the roof do I put the solar panels?

The North facing sector of the roof is the most optimal for solar power generation. Panels on an Eastern or Western facing roof will still create sufficient power. Panels on the Southern facing sector of a roof are not recommended.

What is the payback period for a solar power system?

In most cases, the typical payback period is between 8 and 10 years.

This is dependent on the amount of power the system creates and the cost of power in your region.

As the cost of power continues to increase, it is likely the payback period will continue to decrease.

How long will a solar power system last?

Our solar panels come with a 20 year warranty, that guarantees the panels will provide at least 80% of the rated use after 20 years.

Heat Pump and Air Conditioning FAQs

What heat pump works the best?

Heat pumps come in a variety of models and sizes. When deciding what heat pump to buy it is important to think about the location and the size of the area you are wanting to heat or cool.

Depending on the layout of your room you may be happy to have a heat pump installation sitting on your wall, or you may choose a more discrete option and go for a floor console, or a ceiling cassette.

You may also want to consider getting a heat pump with a star rating for further peace of mind you’re keeping your energy bills as low as you can.

What size heat pump do I need?

Getting the right size heat pump for the area you are wishing to heat or cool is the most important factor in its ability to work and the energy it consumes.

For a rough guide:

•  Room volume x 50 for a house with sufficient insulation

•  Room volume x 60 for a house without sufficient insulation

We strongly recommend booking a free home assessment and we can help you chose the right size unit for your home based on your homes thermal efficiency.

Where is the best place to put a heat pump?

Having your heat pump in the right location can make a big difference in the efficiency of the heat pump and also the cost of the installation.

The first consideration is to make sure your heat pump can blow the air around the room unobstructed.

Secondly, all heat pumps need to link between the indoor and outdoor unit. Placing a heat pump on an external wall so we can run the piping directly to the external unit is ideal and will lower the install costs. Placing the unit on an internal wall may require a gravity pump and additional piping.

Our install price includes up to 5 metres of piping.

Will a heat pump save me money?

Most heat pumps have a COP rating of between 3 and 4.5. This means for one kilowatt of power used it will provide between 3 and 4.5 kilowatts of heat. The higher the COP the higher the efficiency of the unit.

In comparison most other conventional heaters have a COP rating of 1 or less, meaning for 1 kilowatt of power they will provide less than 1 kilowatt of heat.

While heat pumps are much more efficient, we still recommend turning heat pumps off when no-one is home to save power. All our heat pumps have 7 day timers so can be set to warm the house before you wake each morning or before you get home in the evening.

Home Ventilation FAQs

What do Smart vent systems do?

Control Condensation with SmartVent positive

Is a classic positive pressure ventilation system that draws air from the roof cavity and/or outside (optional). The air is then passed throug a filter and introduced into your home to positively pressurize with fresh, clean air and force out moist, stale air. Your SmartVent positive system uses two sensors (roof cavity and within the home) to monitor temperature and is controlled via a multi-function touch-screen controller. Your SmartVent positive system has optional add-ons including heat transfer, summer feature and tempering heaters to provide year-round comfort and other features you would expect from a classic ventilation system.

How much does a Smart Vent System cost to run?

SmartVent systems cost from as little as 35 cents per day to operate.

*Based on the fan(s) power consumption on maximum speed, running 24 hours per day, over a 30-day period, at $0.26/kWh

Can dust and contaminants enter through my roof from outside?

No, SmartVent systems uses high-grade filters to greatly reduce harmful particles entering your home. All systems include a high quality F7 hospital-grade filter that captures 80-90% of fine pollens, dusts and allergens from the air, making it cleaner and safe to breathe. A high quality F7 filter is a must for families with asthma and allergy sufferers. F7 Carbon and F7 HEPA/Carbon filters are also available as optional extras.

Can I install a Smart Vent System in a 2 or 3 Storey house?

Yes, SmartVent systems can be installed into your multi-level home, Outlets can be placed around your home by running ducts through wardrobes or other available voids to various levels. It is always best to have a SmartVent accredited installer to assess your home for access.

Home Insulation FAQs

My house already has insulation. Is it good enough?

Many New Zealand homes built after 1978 do have some form of underfloor and ceiling insulation. However, most homes built prior to 2008 were built with insulation levels well below the current EECA standards. If your ceiling insulation is less than 120mm thick or is not covering the whole ceiling cavity, talk to Aeon energy about a free home insulation assessment to discuss bringing your home up to the NZS4246 standards.

How long does insulation last?

Pink Batts have a lifetime of 50 years. Pink Batts is Fire resistant and is not a good food for rodents so will not encourage rodents into your ceiling cavity.

BRANZ research has shown that a previously un-insulated home will recover the installation costs within just four years in reduced energy bills. This means a standard New Zealand home can save money for a long time after the initial investment is paid off.

What is 'R' Value?

R value is the rating given to insulation based on its ability to resist heat transfer. The higher the R rating the better the performance.

Th R value is determined by the type of product, the thickness, and its density.

How long will it take to insulate my house?

This all depends on the size of your house. In most cases, the install of both underfloor and ceiling insulation is comfortably completed within one day.
